Flight days: Friday, Sunday* and Wednesday.  *On long weekends flights operate on Friday and Monday ONLY (Alberta Family Day weekend in February, Canada Day (July 1) the Heritage Day weekend in August and the Labour Day weekend in September).

  • Assiniboine Lodge guests’ arrival and departure days are based on helicopter flight days.
  • Hut visitors accessing the Park by hiking or skiing are not restricted to arrival and departure days except for long weekends. Note that gear flown by helicopter arrives/departs on flight days. 
  • Campers accessing the Park by hiking or skiing are not restricted to arrival and departure days. Note that gear flown by helicopter arrives/departs on flight days.

Canmore Alpine Heliport flight into Assiniboine

Location: 91 Bow Valley Trail, Canmore, Alberta.

All flight reservations and inquiries must be made through the Assiniboine Lodge Office.  Alpine Helicopters is unable to confirm departure times.

Mount Shark Helipad flights into Assiniboine

Departure Heliport: Mount Shark Helipad

Winter Check in time:

  • Lodge guests and hut visitors: 11:30 am

Summer Check in time:

  • Lodge guests: 11:30 am
  • Hut visitors and campers: 12:30 pm
  • Arrive in Canmore the day before your Assiniboine departure.
  • Depart on commercial flights the day after leaving Assiniboine.
  • Calgary Airport and Canmore shuttle service: Banff Airporter
  • Recommended accomodation in Canmore: Paintbox Lodge
  • Taxi service is possible and economically feasible from hotels in Canmore to Canmore Alpine Heliport.
  • There is no public or economically feasible private transportation options from Canmore to the the Mount Shark Helipad.
  • Limited space in the Assiniboine truck (2-3 people) is available from Canmore to the Mount Shark Helipad. The cost $25 per person/each way, plus 5% tax. Contact the Assiniboine reservations office to pre-book.
  • We make every effort for group members to fly together and with your gear. Thank you for your patience should your gear not arrive on your flight or if your group is seperated. Expect your gear and friends on a consecutive flight.
  • Gear will be loaded and unloaded from the helicopter by Assiniboine staff.

Assiniboine Lodge Guests

  • Please be sure to bring your own packed lunch.  Lunch is not served at the lodge on arrival day.

Canmore Alpine Heliport to Assiniboine Flight Information

  • The Canmore flight is the first flight into Assiniboine. The Heliport is located at 91 Bow Valley Trail on the east side of Canmore, Alberta. There is limited availability on the Canmore flight. It is a 12 minute flight.
  • Parking is at your own risk. Alpine Helicopters and Assiniboine Lodge are not responsible for any damages that may occur to your vehicle.
  • Bring gear to the log cabin with the red roof at the Canmore Alpine Heliport.
  • Register with helicopter staff, tag your baggage and watch a helicopter safety & orientation video.
  • Upon arrival at Assiniboine, gear will be weighed by Assiniboine Lodge staff. Gear above the weight allowance will incur an excess baggage fee that can be paid by Visa, Mastercard or cash at the lodge.

Mount Shark Helipad to Assiniboine Flight Information

  • The Mount Shark Helipad is the main staging area for the majority of flights in/out of Assiniboine. The Mount Shark Helipad is in Kananaskis Provincial Park and is a one-hour drive (41.3 km) on a well maintained dirt road from Canmore, Alberta. The flight is 8 minutes.
  • The Mount Shark Helipad has no services. Be prepared with food and water and dress accordingly. There is an outhouse.
  • Park your car at the parking lot and carry your gear to the Mount Shark Helipad (200 m). Do not drive to Helipad.
  • Parking is at your own risk. Assiniboine Lodge is not responsible for any damages that may occur to your vehicle.
  • Do not leave valuables inside your car.
  • Register with the helicopter staff for flight departure times and for a helicopter safety orientation talk.
  • Gear will be weighed at the Mount Shark Helipad. The excess baggage fee will be automatically charged to the credit card used for booking the flight.

Hut Visitors and Campers

  • Hut visitors and campers are responsible for transporting their gear, by foot or ski, from the Assiniboine Helipad to their overnight destination. The Assiniboine Helipad is located between Assiniboine Lodge and the Naiset Huts. The Assiniboine Helipad is 300 meters from the Naiset Huts, 200 meters from Assiniboine Lodge and 1.4 km from the Magog Campground.
  • The Winter Assiniboine Helipad is located at Assiniboine Lodge. It is a 500 meter ski to the Naiset Huts.

General Information for outgoing passengers

  • Outgoing helicopter passengers mark their gear, and any potentially removable items attached to their gear, with the provided flagging tape or baggage ties.
  • Items such as hiking poles, walking sticks, fishing rods, tripods and ice axes should be treated as separate items and marked with flagging tape or baggage ties.

Assiniboine to Mount Shark Helipad Flight Information

  • Mount Shark flights depart between 11:30-3:00 pm. Lodge guests will be advised of their flight check-in time at breakfast.
  • The first and majority of the flights depart from Assiniboine to the main staging area at the Mount Shark Helipad. 

Assiniboine to Canmore Alpine Heliport flight information

  • The Canmore flight departs between 2:00-3:00pm.  Lodge guests will be advised of their flight check-in time at breakfast.
  • The Canmore flight is the last flight out of Assiniboine. The flight arrives at the Canmore Alpine Heliport. There is limited availability and the flight is reserved for passengers who flew in on the Canmore flight. 

Naiset Visitors and Campers Departure Procedure

  • Check in with Assiniboine Lodge staff during Public Tea Time between 4-5 pm the day before your departure flight for your assigned check-in time.
  • Gear must be brought to Assiniboine Lodge before 9 am on your departure day.
  • Gear is weighed and marked with the appropriate provided flagging tape. Gear above the weight allowance can be paid at this time by Visa, Mastercard or Cash.
  • Sleeping bags and sleeping pads attached to backpacks may have to be removed in order for your bag to fit in the helicopter. Pack these items inside your backpack or mark them with flagging tape.
  • Gear can be stored on the front porch of the lodge.
  • Naiset visitors and campers are responsible for bringing their gear at the estimated check in time, to the Assiniboine Helipad.
